November 18, 2022-Cold Spring Harbor Lab Security Planning

The Cold Spring Harbor Lab is a large campus facility located in the Village of Laurel Hollow that is undergoing a major expansion. The Oyster Bay Cove Police Department is responsible for providing primary police protection to the Lab. On November 14, 2022, at the impetus of myself, Mayor DeVita of Laurel Hollow, and the OBC Police Chief Cronin, a large security exercise was conducted on-site. Approximately 50 senior first responders attended this exercise including representatives from the Nassau County Police, Homeland Security, Suffolk County Police, multiple fire departments, Town and State Emergency Management, the bomb squad, canine unit, marine and aviation divisions, Northwell and others.

Senior lab management and lab security officers also attended. This type of security planning occurs in other Nassau County campus environments. In the event of an incident, the OBC Police have primary command until a Unified Command is established. All parties on-hand discussed existing security measures and how they can be further enhanced through greater coordination, increased communication and planning.

Both myself and Mayor DeVita will continue to stay in communication with the Lab and law enforcement to ensure that a proper security plan is in place and continuously updated.
