June 3, 2021-Enhanced Village Recycling Program

Dear Residents,

I am pleased to  announce on behalf of the Board of Trustees that the  Village of Oyster Bay Cove is initiating  a new recycling program.

Although Oyster Bay Cove has had a recycling program in place, our new program will be enhanced.  We  want to give you the opportunity to actively participate in protecting the environment.

Over the past several years, curbside recycling programs in the United States have faced significant challenges, including shifting commodity economics, stresses on taxpayer funded collection services, concerns about material quality, and a general inelasticity of collected supply to market forces.   Despite the challenges, there are many benefits of recycling including creating jobs, saving energy, and keeping waste out of landfills.  Importantly, recycling provides a vital and consistent source of commodity feedstock to manufacturers throughout the world.

“The collection of curbside recyclables from millions of individual homes across America starts a chain of job creation and material utilization that enormously benefits the U.S. economy,” said Will Flower, Senior Vice President for Winters Bros.  “The purpose of curbside recycling is to efficiently collect and deliver high quality materials from U.S. households to the circular economy as we recover millions of tons of paper and packaging for the manufacturing of new products.”

We have developed a simple and effective program that Oyster Bay Cove residents can embrace  to promote recycling.  Recycling is a necessary part of the waste management system on Long Island.    Today, every person on Long Island produces more than 4.6 pounds of garbage every single day.  That equates to more than 13 million pounds of waste produced each day.

Under the Village’s new program, residents  will separate and set out paper and cardboard one week and segregate tin, aluminum and plastic containers the next week.  Recyclables will be collected  on Wednesdays for all residents in Oyster Bay Cove.

Collected recyclables are future sorted and shipped to manufacturing plants for recycling.

Effective Wednesday June 9th  the residents of Oyster Bay Cove will be receiving Dual Stream Recycling services from Winters Brothers  Waste.

Dual Stream Recycling is simple! Recycled items are placed out for collection according to material type on an alternating week schedule.

The calendar divides weeks of the year into “A weeks” and “B weeks.”

On Wednesdays of an “A week”Residents should place Newspaper & Cardboard in their recycling containers for collection of recyclables on Wednesday.

On Wednesdays of a “B week”:  Residents should place plastic containers, tin cans and aluminum cans in their recycling container for collection of these recyclables on Wednesday.

All recyclable items should be placed out for collection according to material type on the alternating week schedule.  Glass is no longer acceptable as a recyclable item in the program.  Place recyclables out for collection in clearly marked recycling containers.  Keep recyclables separate from your regular trash containers. The drivers from Winters Brothers . need to be able to recognize the container as recycling. Regular trash cans with a recycling label or markings are acceptable  Recycling containers  can also  be purchased at a hardware store or online retailer.

With your help, our recycling program will be a big success!

Best Regards,
