April 5, 2021-Mail Theft

The Village has  been made aware  of U.S. Mail being stolen out of residential mailboxes in a number of North Shore neighborhoods.   There has  been no confirmed reports of this occurring in Oyster Bay Cove.  The mailbox thieves look for checks, credit cards, personal information, packages and items of value that you receive through the mail. Mail theft is highly under-reported because most people do not realize when their mail has been stolen.

We would  like to offer a few preventive tips.  First, do not leave mail in your mailbox after dark, since the majority of these thefts are occuring late at night. Secondly, it is always safer to bring outgoing mail to the post office or to put it in a US mailbox. If you do use your mailbox for outgoing mail, please put it out in the morning. Thirdly, you may want to install a stronger locking mailbox.  These mailboxes make it difficult for thieves to get to your mail, since they cannot easily grab it.  There are many secure mailbox options.  One example, is the Mail Boss Mail Manager (Model 7506) www.mailboss.com/shop/curbside-mailboxes/mail-manager,  that retails for $125, but is also available for purchase through Amazon or Home Depot at a discount.

And lastly, as always should you observe any suspicious persons or vehicles around your mailbox please call  911, so the Oyster Bay Cove Police  can respond .
